Bangladesh: Amid deteriorating relations with India, Bangladesh once again needed help. In view of the shortage of natural gas in Bangladesh and increasing demand for electricity, Adani Group company Adani Power is increasing the export of electricity to Bangladesh. This has been revealed in the government figures of both the countries.
Continuous supply from 2023
According to Indian and Bangladeshi government data, exports of electricity to Bangladesh from Adani’s coal-based power plant in Godda, Jharkhand have increased significantly. In the three months till December, its supply has increased by about 38 percent annually to 2.25 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh).
According to the Bangladesh government, the electricity sent from India has reached a record 15.6 percent of its total power mix, which was only 12 percent in 2024. Adani Power started supplying electricity to Bangladesh from the year 2023 and it is continuing since then. This means that despite the deteriorating diplomatic relations between the two countries, the electricity business or transaction is flourishing. However, a panel appointed by the Bangladesh government has termed the supply of electricity from India as more expensive than necessary.
At the same time, Dhaka’s independent energy expert Ajaz Hussain said, “Adani’s electricity is still cheaper than the electricity generated from oil. Due to shortage, Bangladesh has to use oil-fired power plants.” These days the tension between the two countries is so much that both have temporarily banned the visa service.
Bangladesh is facing gas crisis
Rezaul Karim, chairman of the Bangladesh Power Development Board, told Reuters that power imports are needed to reduce the shortage, which also includes the shortage of natural gas (Bangladesh’s main power source). In such a situation, the demand for electricity may increase by an estimated 6 percent to 7 percent in 2026.
Karim said that Bangladesh will also increase the import of coal this year to increase coal-based power production in the country to meet the gas shortage. Data from analytics firm Kpler has shown that coal imports will increase by 35 percent to a record 17.34 million metric tons in 2025.
