Bangladesh is completely following the footsteps of Pakistan. After the Shahbaz Sharif government, now the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus has expressed its desire to join the peace force being deployed to restore peace in the Gaza Strip.
Bangladesh’s National Security Advisor Khalilur Rahman held meetings with senior US officials at the US State Department in Washington, where he said Dhaka was ready to send its troops to Gaza. According to the report of CNN-News18, US Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South-Central Asian Affairs Sergio Gore was also present in this meeting. Bangladesh’s National Security Advisor has received the green signal from the US to deploy troops for the stabilization force in Gaza.
Khalilur Rahman also briefed US officials on domestic and regional issues as well as Bangladesh’s possible role in the Gaza peacekeeping force. He also discussed the upcoming elections in the country, bilateral trade, Rohingya crisis and growing relations with Pakistan.
Why is Bangladesh sending troops to Gaza?
According to the report, Bangladesh is offering military assistance or security cooperation in Muslim-dominated conflicts to gain strategic support from Washington. US officials have already assured full support to Bangladeshi troops in Gaza.
Chief adviser Mohammad Younis wants to use the move to strengthen his position among his domestic supporters, particularly Jamaat-e-Islami, which has long supported the Palestinian cause. By supporting Trump’s Gaza peace plan, Mohammad Yunus is trying to become his favorite like Asim Munir.
