BCCI has adopted a strict stance regarding Team India’s two biggest stars Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The board has clearly instructed both the veteran players that if they want to play for India, they will have to play domestic cricket. BCCI has said that both the players have now retired from two formats (T20 and Test), hence it is necessary to participate in domestic tournaments to maintain fitness and form.
Rohit Sharma made his point clear
According to the Indian Express report, Rohit Sharma has already informed the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) that he will be available to play in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26. Not only this, Rohit has also indicated that if needed, he can also play for Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20 tournament). This decision shows that Rohit Sharma is completely serious about maintaining his fitness and the rhythm of his game.
Suspense on Virat Kohli’s availability
On the other hand, there is still speculation regarding Virat Kohli. Kohli has not yet clarified whether he will participate in the domestic ODI tournament or not. However, the board’s indication is clear that if he wants to retain his place in India’s ODI team, he will have to return to the field in the domestic tournament.
BCCI’s strict order
BCCI sources said, “The team management and the board have given their orders to both the players. If they want to be selected for the Indian team, they will have to perform in domestic cricket. After a long break, the players should achieve match fitness through domestic cricket only.”
In fact, even before this, BCCI had given a similar order after the poor performance against Australia. At that time both Kohli and Rohit had played one match each in Ranji Trophy. After which he took retirement from some formats before the England tour.
Ajit Agarkar’s statement again came into discussion
BCCI selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar had said some time ago, “We had made it clear a year ago that whenever players are available, they should play domestic cricket. This is the only way to keep themselves fit and sharp.”
When will the tournament start
Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26 will start from 24 December 2025. If Kohli also comes to play in this, then it will be a rare opportunity to see both the legends together on the Indian domestic stage.
This news is a relief for the fans of Team India, because the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on the home ground will not only make the tournament exciting but will also act as an inspiration for the young players.
