Most people like to eat roasted gram in winter. But a recent revelation has increased people’s concern. Adulteration of a dangerous industrial dye called Auramine O has been confirmed in roasted gram found in many markets of the capital Delhi. This is the same chemical which is used to color clothes and leather. Its use in food can be dangerous for health.
Its presence was found in samples taken from many busy markets including Lajpat Nagar. In the initial investigation, Auramine O was found in 40 percent of the samples, after which FSSI and Food Safety Department have started action on a large scale. So far 15 FIRs have been registered in this regard and licenses of about 50 vendors have also been suspended. Apart from this, heavy fine has also been imposed on many people. In such a situation, let us tell you today that if you are also eating adulterated roasted gram, then you should be careful because it can increase the risk of cancer.
What is Auramine O and how dangerous is it?
According to experts, Auramine O is a synthetic yellow pigment which is not allowed to be used in any food item. It dissolves in water and turns the chickpeas bright yellow and makes them look crispier, but this is the same chemical that has been declared a probable carcinogen by the WHO’s International Cancer Research Agency. This chemical enters the body and first harms the kidneys, then the liver and later the blender. Its consumption for a long time can also affect the nervous system, causing symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, headache and vomiting. At the same time, this adulteration is considered even more dangerous for children, pregnant women and the elderly.
What did the experts tell about the disadvantages and methods of detection?
Many experts have termed roasted gram as a serious threat and said that gram adulterated with Auramine O can harm many organs of the body in the long run. Experts also tell how people can identify real and fake gram at home. It can be seen by soaking gram or pulses in water for a few minutes. If the water turns yellow or the lentils leave their color then it should be understood that color is mixed in it. Real dal sinks slowly in water whereas fake dal sinks immediately and releases colour.
How to protect?
- To avoid counterfeit gram, do not buy gram that is too shiny, extremely yellow or has an irregularly crunchy appearance.
- Soak the gram in water and check whether it leaves any colour.
- Buy only from trusted shops and branded packet products.
- If any kind of chemical taste or color is seen in the gram, then stop consuming such gram immediately.
