Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revealed plans to form a new regional alliance, which he has named ‘Hexagon of Alliances’. This alliance is being prepared to counter the growing radical threat in the Middle East. India has been named as the main partner in this alliance. This announcement has come just before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Israel, which starts today on February 25.
Alliance will work against radical axis
Netanyahu mentioned this plan in his cabinet meeting on February 22. In a statement issued by Israel’s Foreign Ministry, it was said that this alliance will work against the ‘Radical Axis’. He specifically named ‘Radical Shia Axis’ and ‘Emerging Radical Sunni Axis’.
By the Radical Shia Axis, he is referring to Iran and its supported groups like Hamas, Hezbollah and Houthi, against whom Israel has taken strict measures in the past. At the same time, the Radical Sunni Axis includes extremist networks like ISIS and other emerging threats.
Apart from India-Israel, Greece and Cyprus will also join this alliance. There has been talk of connecting other Arab, African and Asian countries also.
What did Netanyahu say on the alliance?
Netanyahu said, ‘In my view, a complete system will be formed, which will work like a ‘hexagon’ around or inside the Middle East. This will include India, Arab countries, African nations, Mediterranean countries like Greece and Cyprus, and some Asian countries, whose names I am not telling right now. I will present it in a systematic manner.
Netanyahu further said, ‘Its purpose is to create an axis of countries that have similar views on reality, challenges and goals. These are against the radical Shia axis, which we have hit very hard, and also against the emerging radical Sunni axis. All these countries have different beliefs and our cooperation can give big results, as well as ensure our strength and future.
Hexagon will also compete with the radical Sunni axis
This announcement has come at a time when tension is at its peak in the Middle East. There is already a conflict going on between Israel and Iran. Additionally, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan signed a strategic defense agreement in September 2025, which many experts are calling ‘Islamic NATO’. Turkey is also trying to join it. In his statement, Netanyahu described it as part of the ‘radical Sunni axis’ and said that the Hexagon alliance will counter it.
Will India benefit from Hexagon?
This alliance is important for India because it will go beyond bilateral relations and create a multilateral security framework. India, UAE and Israel are already cooperating through frameworks like the Abraham Accords and the I2U2 grouping, but till now there was no formal security pact. The focus in the Hexagon will be on security, intelligence sharing and strengthening defense cooperation.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Israel is taking place on 25-26 February, which is on the invitation of Netanyahu. This is PM Modi’s second official visit to Israel. According to the statement of the Ministry of External Affairs of India, both the leaders will talk on regional and global issues, which are of interest to both the countries. The Hexagon alliance is likely to be discussed during this visit, although there has been no official confirmation.
