Bangladesh’s first woman Prime Minister and Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) President Khaleda Zia died on Tuesday (December 30) during treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. A BNP post said, ‘Khalida Zia passed away at around 6 am, just after Fajr prayers. We request everyone to pray for her.’
BNP President Khaleda Zia was suffering from many problems like liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, chest and heart. He was admitted to the hospital on November 23 and was undergoing treatment for the last 36 days, but last night his condition worsened significantly.
Khaleda Zia was the first woman PM of Bangladesh
For the first time in the year 1991, Khaleda Zia became the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh. Her husband Ziaur Rahman was the former President of Bangladesh. Khaleda Zia’s first term was from 1991 to 1996 and for the second time she was the Prime Minister from 2001 to 2006. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was founded by Zia’s husband and former President Ziaur Rahman in 1978.
Took over politics after husband’s murder
In the year 1981, Zia’s husband Rehman was murdered and after this Khaleda Zia became active in politics. In 1982, a military coup was carried out under the leadership of former army chief Lieutenant General Hussain Muhammad Ershad. In 1984, Zia became the president of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Let us tell you that Zia has the title of becoming the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the second woman Prime Minister of Muslim countries after Benazir Bhutto.
Had political rivalry with Sheikh Hasina
The political rivalry between Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina was known as the Battle of the Begums in Bangladesh, which influenced politics there for decades. BNP was the main opposition party in Bangladesh during the era of Sheikh Hasina. BNP had boycotted the 2024 general elections. Let us tell you that at present Khaleda Zia’s BNP is the largest party in Bangladesh. Zia’s son Tariq Rahman is being said to be the future Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Was famous as Deshnetri
Khaleda Zia was born in 1945 in Jalpaiguri in Dinajpur district of Bengal Presidency. His father Iskander Ali Majumdar was a tea businessman and mother was Taiba Majumdar. Jiya was the third among 5 siblings. The life of Begum Khaleda Zia has been a long story of struggle between victory, defeat, jail and illness. For her supporters, Zia was a patriot.
