‘Being from tribal society you ….’, wife Gitanjali wrote a letter to President Draupadi Murmu for the release of Sonam Wangchuk


Gitanjali Angamo, wife of jailed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, since the violence in Ladakh, has written a letter to President Draupadi Murmu on Wednesday (October 01, 2025). Gitanjali has also sent copies of this letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

In the letter, he has dismissed the allegations made against Sonam Wangchuk, demanding unconditional release. Wangchuk’s wife said that on September 26, Leh Inspector Rigjin Gurmet informed him that Wangchuk was detained under Section 3 (2) of NSA and sent to Jodhpur Central Jail.

Ladakh is loyal to its nationalism and Indian Army

He wrote in the letter, ‘I was assured that after reaching Jodhpur, he would call me and talk to my husband. He also told me that this is not arrest, because no FIR has been registered, but they are in custody under NSA.

Gitanjali Angamo said that however, till date no talk has been made to Sonam Wangchuk. Wangchuk’s wife further said that Ladakh is known for his nationalism and loyalty to the Indian Army. He further said that Wangchuk is making shelter for the Indian Army in this region.

Wife Gitanjali’s question to Sarkar

Angmo wrote, ‘My husband Sonam Wangchuk has always been in favor of India’s solidarity, strengthening our borders and a strong democratic system.’ He raised the question whether it is a crime in Ladakh to fight for the interests of the people. Wangchuk’s wife said, ‘His Majesty, you will be better than the feelings of the people of Leh Ladakh, being from a tribal background.’

During this, Geetanjali Angmo has also asked four questions to President Murmu. She has asked if she has the right to meet Wangchuk on the phone and personally, can she help her husband, know about the reasons for her arrest and their legal rights, can she know the position of her husband and whether he is responsible citizens of India, she has the right to peaceful expression and freedom of traffic.

Demand for release of Sonam Wangchuk

Angmo also condemned the behavior done by the government and agencies. He wrote, ‘This is a violation of the spirit of the Constitution of India. Article 21 and 22 give every citizen fundamental rights of legal representation. Surprisingly, we have been completely denied this minimum right.

Wangchuk’s wife further said, ‘His Majesty, we appeal to intervene as the head of the state and raise the voice of Vivek in this chaotic situation. As the President of India, you are a symbol of the principles of equality, justice and discretion. He demanded the unconditional release of Sonam Wangchuk, saying that he can never become a threat to his nation.
