Why Is Belly Fat Hard to Lose: After the age of 30, many people are troubled by the same question that whether they change their diet or stop working out, why does their belly start appearing? On this common but confusing question, Dr Saurabh Sethi, a trained gastroenterologist from AIIMS, Harvard and Stanford, practicing in California, has explained the reason in clear words. He says that after 30, such changes begin in the body, which are not visible from outside, but directly impact the belly fat. With increasing age the muscles gradually start decreasing. The less muscles you have, the less calories the body will burn. This simply means that the same food, which earlier did not cause any harm, now starts converting into fat.

Why does belly bulge after 30?

Muscles are not just for strength, but they also play a big role in controlling blood sugar. When muscle mass decreases, sugar remains in the blood for a long time and eventually starts getting stored as fat around the abdomen. This is the reason why belly fat starts appearing rapidly after 30. Along with this, insulin sensitivity also decreases with age. That means the body is not able to handle carbohydrates as easily as before. The result is that the same roti, rice or sweet now starts storing more fat than before, especially around the waist.

Hormonal changes speed up this entire process. Growth hormone, testosterone and estrogen levels gradually fall, while the stress hormone cortisol begins to increase. This balance leads the body to accumulate internal abdominal fat i.e. visceral fat, which is considered the most harmful. This problem becomes more serious in those who suffer from fatty liver, prediabetes, diabetes or high triglycerides. In such cases, insulin resistance and inflammation increases, due to which fat accumulates rapidly around the stomach and liver. Lifestyle also changes with age. Lack of physical activity, sitting work, stress, lack of sleep and irregular eating habits all promote belly fat. In some people, genetic reasons also increase the possibility of increasing belly fat.

How to reduce belly fat?

To control belly fat, experts recommend including enough protein in the diet, doing regular strength training and being active daily. Along with this, 7 to 8 hours of sleep and distance from processed food helps in maintaining hormonal balance. Overall, increasing belly fat after 30 does not happen suddenly. This is the result of gradual changes going on inside the body, which can be controlled to a great extent with proper diet, exercise and lifestyle.
