‘Bengal has become a safe haven for rapists’, BJP targets Mamata government on Durgapur gang rape.

Political rhetoric has intensified after the incident of alleged gang rape of a medical student in Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made serious allegations against Mamata Banerjee government regarding the safety of women. BJP leaders said that the law and order situation in the state has deteriorated and the ‘appeasement policy’ of the Mamata government has given a free hand to the criminals.

BJP targets Mamata government
BJP leader and Union Minister Sukant Majumdar posted on social media platform X that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has ‘made West Bengal a safe haven for rapists and criminals.’ He wrote that after the horrific rape of a female doctor in RG Kar Hospital, now a second incident has come to light in Durgapur.

He said that the medical student hailing from Odisha was taken out of the campus and gang-raped in the nearby forest. Majumdar alleged that under Mamata Banerjee’s ‘failed and lawless rule’, West Bengal has become a nightmare for women’s safety. He said that from village to city, hospital to home – there is no safety left for women anywhere. Police investigation has become paralyzed due to the appeasement policy and criminals are getting a free hand.

Amit Malviya said – remember the RG tax case
BJP leader Amit Malviya also attacked the Mamata government and said that this incident in Durgapur has created a wave of anger among the people. He also shared videos of sloganeering against Mamata government in Durgapur. Malviya said that the second year student of IQ City Medical College was gang-raped by Wasif Ali and his associates in the nearby forest. The victim is a resident of Odisha and is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital.

He said that this brutal crime has given rise to massive protests across Durgapur. People are increasingly demanding justice and accountability. He said this reflects the repeated failure of law and order under the Mamata Banerjee government. West Bengal Police should conduct a transparent and fair investigation, so that the culprits get strict punishment.

TMC minister said- do not link crime with politics
At the same time, West Bengal Minister Shashi Panja said that BJP should not give political color to crimes against women. He claimed that BJP looks at every such matter from a political perspective, which is not appropriate. He said that the victim’s parents have come from Odisha and have expressed confidence in the ongoing investigation.

The minister said that Kolkata is one of the safest cities in the entire country and the Mamata government works for the empowerment of women and girls. He said that the Chief Minister does not compromise with any kind of injustice and we should wait for the investigation to be completed. He appealed to BJP that such cases should not be used for political gains.

What is the matter?
According to the police, the victim had gone out of the college campus to eat with a friend between 8 and 8:30 pm on Friday night. While returning, his companion left him and three unknown youths arrived there. They snatched the student’s mobile phone and dragged her into the forest, where she was gang-raped. The accused threatened him that if he told anything to anyone, he would have to face serious consequences. They also demanded money to return his mobile.

The statement of the victim has been recorded. Police have interrogated his friend and CCTV footage is being scrutinized. Forensic team has been sent to the spot so that evidence can be collected.

National Women Commission team also reached Durgapur
National Commission for Women member Archana Majumdar said that crimes against women are increasing continuously in Bengal and the police is not playing an active role in such cases, which is very unfortunate. He said that the Commission team is going to Durgapur to meet the victim and her family and get in-depth information about the case.
