According to mythological beliefs, on this date Yamuna Mai invited her brother Yamraj to her house. Welcoming him and applying tilak. Yamraj was pleased with his service and took a promise from him that every year on Kartik Shukla Dwitiya Tithi, he would go to his house and have food.

This is a festival which is celebrated with great enthusiasm from cities to villages. According to the belief, sisters give coconut to their brother and wish for his happiness, peace and prosperity. Coconut shell is considered a symbol of brother’s protection.
Sisters also bless their brothers for long life. For this, Tilak thali is prepared by placing roli, mauli, sandalwood, flowers, sweets, aarti and betel nuts in the puja thali. The lamp is lit facing south. After applying Tilak, sisters bless the brother with Aarti.
