What is Carbide Bomb?: The trend of firecrackers and toy guns during festivals is increasing rapidly among children and youth. Carbide gun is one of these. Even though its price may be only between 150 to 200 rupees, its effect is proving to be very dangerous on health. Recently, a case of damage to the eyes of more than 125 people due to this gun came to light in Bhopal. Many small children were also included in these, whose condition deteriorated so much that corneal transplant had to be done. Let us tell you about it in detail, why is it so dangerous and how much harm can it cause?

What is carbide bomb?

Carbide bomb is actually a dangerous game played on festivals among children and youth. Calcium carbide, water and plastic pipes are used in this. When carbide and water react, gas is formed, which is ignited and produced a powerful explosion. During this, loud noise, smoke and sparks come out. Even though it looks cheap and fun, its effect is very dangerous. It can cause serious injury to eyes, ears and skin. According to doctors, carbide bombs can burn the cornea and even lead to permanent blindness.

Biggest effect on eyes

Calcium carbide, plastic pipe and water are used in carbide guns. When it is burnt, smoke and fire come out with a loud bang. This explosion causes the most damage to the eyes. According to doctors, this can cause burning of the cornea, causing redness and irritation in the eyes. Many times, vision can be lost permanently due to corneal tear.

risk of permanent blindness

Eye disease experts say that carbide guns have adverse effects not only on the eyes but also on the ears and brain. Sudden high pressure can rupture the eardrum and reduce hearing ability. At the same time, there is a possibility of retina damage and permanent blindness.

A study published in the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology stated that thermo-chemical eye injuries caused by calcium carbide are extremely dangerous. In this research, 28 eyes of 23 patients were tested. In mild cases (Dua Grade I-III), the vision of patients ultimately remained around 20/32, but in severe cases (Dua Grade IV-VI), the vision reduced to 20/200. That means there is a risk of permanent blindness from such blasts.

damage to skin and face

The hot gas and sparks emanating from the explosion burn the skin and face. Children may have blisters and wounds on their faces. Many times, due to fear, children do not get immediate treatment, due to which the infection increases further.

Why is carbide gun dangerous?

  • The calcium carbide used in it is a poisonous chemical.
  • The shock of the explosion directly affects the eyes and ears.
  • Children find it fun, but in reality it is deadly.
  • Repeated use can cause serious problems like cornea damage and hearing loss.

What precautions should be taken?

Parents should keep children away from such dangerous toys.

If there is an eye injury, wash it immediately with clean water and consult a doctor.

If the cornea appears blurry or vision is reduced, do not delay.
