Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar believes that the debate on preparing a spin-friendly pitch at Eden Gardens for the first Test match against South Africa is meaningless as the country has been preparing such wickets for a long time. India suffered a 30-run defeat against South Africa inside three days when the team failed to chase the modest target of 124 runs.
The defeat to South Africa in Kolkata is reminiscent of the 0-3 defeat at the hands of New Zealand last year where the visiting team’s spinners played a key role in the historic clean sweep against Rohit Sharma’s team. However, Bhuvneshwar did not pay much attention to this defeat.
Bhuvneshwar, co-founder of ‘Cricgiri’, said during the launch event of this app, “This is not the first time that a pitch helpful for spinners has been prepared. Earlier no one raised this question, because India was winning and winning and losing is part of the game. It is not that the team has not lost before or has lost for the first time. I do not think this (defeat) is a matter of big concern for me.”
When asked whether it was necessary for India to play with four spinners at Eden, Bhuvneshwar said that the selection is done based on the condition of the pitch. Captain Shubhman Gill had to withdraw midway through the Kolkata Test due to neck spasms which was a big blow for India but Bhuvneshwar refused to talk about the workload management of the young captain.
When Bhuvneshwar, who plays for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL, was asked whether the players would be able to take the field with a positive mindset after the death of many fans in the stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy stadium this year, he said, “There are many tournaments to be held before the IPL, so when the IPL camp starts, many things will be discussed and what is the mental state of the team and what is going on. A lot will depend on how the players are in the tournaments before the IPL.” How we perform and how we enter the IPL, so all these things matter.”
