Big accident in Iklahara, Madhya Pradesh, 5 people buried due to rock collapse in coal mine, one in critical condition


A major accident took place late on Sunday night in the closed open cast coal mine of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) located at Iklahara in Pench area. About five people were buried under the debris due to the sudden collapse of rocks in the mine. According to the information, the condition of four of them is said to be serious. Whereas a young man has been referred to Nagpur Medical College due to his critical condition.

According to the information, the accident happened around 3 o’clock in the night, when some local people were digging to extract coal illegally in a closed mine. During the excavation, a huge rock fell from above, due to which the people present nearby got trapped under the debris. There was a loud noise due to the rock falling and after this there was a scream for help. Due to darkness, there were many difficulties in taking out the injured.

All the injured are undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Local people somehow dug out all the injured and took them to the hospital. Among the injured, woman Shahina Qureshi was brought to Parasia Civil Hospital, where after first aid she was referred to Chhindwara. Two other injured have been admitted to Dr. Nahar Hospital, Chhindwara, while seriously injured Rizwan Khan was first taken to Anand Hospital, from where he was immediately sent to Nagpur as his condition became critical.

On receiving information about the accident, Parasia SDM and Tehsildar reached the spot at 5 pm on Sunday evening and inspected. On the other hand, the police got information about the incident late, due to which even the names of the injured were not available in the initial phase. The four injured identified so far are Rizwan Khan (28), Kunal Koche (23), Shadab Khan (32) and Saina Qureshi (25), all residents of Ikalhara Camp.

Excavation was being done illegally in the mine

According to sources, the mine where the incident took place is of Badkuhi open cast area, where production has been stopped for years. After production stopped, this area is said to be under the control of the coal mafia. The layers of coal are clearly visible from the surface, due to which illegal digging has been going on for a long time. Even on the night of the accident, about fifteen people had gone for the same illegal digging. The police is now investigating the entire matter. Questions are also being raised regarding illegal activities and security arrangements in the mine area.
