In Karnataka, Congress on Friday suspended senior party leader Rajeev Gowda from the party, who had used abusive language against Shidlaghatta Municipal Commissioner. An FIR was registered against the Congress leader on January 14 following a complaint by Municipal Commissioner Amrita Gowda. Amrita Gowda had alleged that he abused her over phone and threatened her with dire consequences if she removed the banner with her photograph.

What did the Congress disciplinary committee tell?

In the order, Congress State Disciplinary Committee Chairman K. Rehman Khan said that considering the seriousness of the matter, Rajeev Gowda has been suspended from the party. Even after 10 days of the incident, the police have not been able to trace them.

KPCC had recommended suspension

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) on Wednesday (January 21) had recommended suspension of Rajeev Gowda for threatening and abusing the Municipal Commissioner. Due to this incident, the ruling Congress had to face embarrassment at the national level. Deputy CM DK Shivakumar had also said that if any Congress leader has done such a thing, then strict action will be taken against him.

Rajiv Gowda is said to be close to DK Shivkumar.
Rajiv Gowda had contested the last assembly elections as a Congress candidate from Sidlaghatta and is said to be close to Food Minister KH Muniyappa and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar.

On the instructions of KPCC Chief DK Shivakumar, the state disciplinary committee had issued him a notice on January 15, 2026. However, he has not yet responded to that notice.

State Congress Working President (Administration) G.C. Chandrashekhar, Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee, K. In a letter to Rahman Khan, he said, ‘The statements given by Rajiv Gowda in this matter have been widely circulated in the media, due to which the party and its leadership have suffered serious embarrassment. The KPCC President has taken serious cognizance of this issue and has directed that the matter of suspension of Rajeev Gowda (Sidlaghatta) from the party be referred to the KPCC Disciplinary Committee.

High Court had reprimanded Karnataka government

It is noteworthy that the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday reprimanded Congress leader Rajiv Gowda for threatening and abusing a woman Municipal Commissioner over phone and questioned the government as to why it did not make serious allegations against him. A bench headed by Justice M. Nagaprasanna, while hearing the petition to quash the FIR registered against Rajeev Gowda in the case, reprimanded the petitioner. Rajiv Gowda is currently absconding and the petition was filed through his lawyer.

The bench said, ‘Does the petitioner have no respect for women? How can the petitioner speak like this? Words once spoken cannot be taken back. An uncontrolled tongue can ruin everything.

The court further remarked that even an apology would not improve the mentality that had caused the injury.
