There is big relief news for those buying electric vehicles (EV) in Delhi. Delhi government has now taken concrete steps regarding the long pending EV subsidy. According to the Transport Department, around 26,800 EV owners will be given their outstanding subsidy amount from December. For this, the government is going to release an amount of about Rs 42.5 crore. Let us know in detail.
Delhi’s EV policy
- The Delhi government implemented its first EV policy in the year 2020, which remained effective for three years and ended in August 2023. During this period, a huge increase in the sales of electric vehicles was recorded in the capital and Delhi became one of the major EV markets of the country. However, due to delay in implementing the new policy, subsidy payments stopped and thousands of vehicle owners had to wait for their amount. Now the government has extended the existing policy till next year and has decided to release all the pending subsidies in a phased manner.
Approval process of more than 26 thousand applications
- In fact, in the last ten months the Transport Department has received a total of 26,862 subsidy applications. Scrutiny of all applications has been completed and duplicate entries have been removed. The final list has been prepared, which has been sent to the Cabinet for approval. After approval, eligible EV owners will be given their subsidy amount in installments.
Digitalization of subsidy process
- Delhi government is now going to completely digitalize the process of subsidy distribution. Under this, the payment system will be linked to the National Vehicle Portal so that all three stages of application, inquiry and payment can be completed on a single platform. Also, a technical committee has been formed which will review the new EV models and decide which vehicles will be eligible for subsidy.

- The objective of Delhi’s EV policy is to promote electric vehicles as an alternative to petrol and diesel vehicles. This policy has not only reduced pollution but also given a boost to charging infrastructure and the domestic EV industry. Currently, more than 50,000 electric vehicles are running on the roads of Delhi, which shows the success of this policy.
