Big change in IPL 2026! This Indian player can wear Chennai Super Kings jersey, preparing to enter the team in place of Ashwin

IPL 2026: A big trading news is in the headlines before IPL 2026. According to reports, Gujarat Titans (GT) has agreed to trade its all-rounder Washington Sundar to Chennai Super Kings (CSK). If this deal is completed, it will be a great opportunity for CSK, especially when the team’s senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had announced his retirement from IPL earlier this year.

Washington Sundar returns to his home

For Washington Sundar, who hails from Tamil Nadu, this step will be like a “homecoming”. He started his IPL career with Rising Pune Supergiants in 2017, but could score only 133 runs and 2 wickets in 6 matches played for Gujarat Titans in the last season (IPL 2025). According to reports, the Gujarat team was not able to utilize Sundar properly, which is why this trade deal between the two teams has become possible.

Trade deal price and terms

According to the report of Tamil news website Samayam, CSK can buy Washington Sundar for Rs 3.2 crore. This price is equal to the 2026 mega auction price of GT. Interestingly, CSK has not put any additional conditions on this trade, which means Sundar can join the team directly.

Sundar in place of Ashwin

CSK management was already planning to include Sundar in the team in place of Ashwin. Ashwin was bought for Rs 9.75 crore, but he could not perform well in IPL 2025. He took only 33 runs and 7 wickets in only 9 matches. Due to his performance not being up to expectations, his release was considered certain, but before that he said goodbye to his IPL career.

CSK is preparing a youth team

The 2025 season was very disappointing for CSK, as the team finished its journey at the bottom of the points table for the first time. Now the focus of the franchise is on young players, and Sundar’s entry is considered a part of this strategy.

If this deal is officially confirmed, Sundar will play an important role in the Dhoni-led team as both a spin and lower-order batsman.
