The academic session of 2026–27 is going to be different in many ways for families living in Dubai. Especially for those parents whose children are preparing to go to school for the first time. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has made a major change regarding the minimum age for admission in school, which will change the rules for admission in classes FS1, FS2 (KG1), KG2 and beyond.
This change is not limited to just changing the date, but it will have a direct impact on the class structure of schools, availability of seats, and plans of parents. Many families who were already considering the admission of their children as fixed, now have to understand the situation again according to the new rules. So let us know what is the new rule, at what age admission will be given in which class, and what effect it will have on families.
What is the new age limit rule of UAE?
The UAE Ministry of Education has announced that in most of the schools starting in August or September, the last age calculation date for admission will now be 31 December instead of 31 August, i.e. now the child’s age will be counted till 31 December. According to the new rule, the age limit for new admission from the session 2026–27 is that the age of Pre-KG/FS1 child should be at least 3 years as on 31st December.
KG1 / FS2 must have completed 4 years by 31st December. KG2 / Class 1 – Must have completed 5 years by 31st December and Class 1 / Class 2 – Must have completed 6 years by 31st December. This rule will be applicable only to children taking new admission in 2026–27. It will not affect the children who are already studying in school. Some schools in Dubai, especially those of Indian celebrities, start their sessions from April. Such schools will follow the cut-off date of March 31 as before.
Why was this change needed?
The aim of the government is that the rules of admission should be the same in the entire country. This step will bring equality among different celebs (British, American, IB etc.). Children born at the end of the year will not have to wait as long as before. There will be coordination with the education system prevalent at the international level. The government wants that the admission of children should not be done only on the basis of date of birth, but keeping in mind their developmental readiness.
What was the impact on families?
The effect of this new rule has been seen immediately. The admission offers received by some children in FS1 were withdrawn because as per the new rules they now became eligible for FS2. The parents who had already deposited the fees were left in confusion. Many families had to change their future plans. However, parents generally have the right to refund of fees if the school cancels the admission. Still, the sudden change has posed both emotional and practical challenges.
How are schools helping?
Many schools in Dubai are starting new schemes to ease this transition. Bloom World Academy has started a special program named Pre-KG Nova. It is for children who are just before they go to formal classes. In this, skills like language, social behavior and self-reliance are developed. Schools like GEMS Wellington Academy are making changes to the class structure and increasing the number of seats to accommodate children as per the new age policy. Schools are now explaining the rules to parents through charts, emails and meetings. Some schools are also offering waiting lists and alternative admission options.
