Controversy has increased over the Chadarposhi ceremony held every year at the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti in Ajmer. Now the district court has issued a notice to the Minority Ministry of the Central Government on the petition filed by Hindu Sena. The court has asked the ministry to explain its stand in the next hearing to be held on December 10.
According to information received from Jaipur, Hindu Sena’s national president Vishnu Gupta had filed an application in the district court of Ajmer. It says that Ajmer Dargah was originally an ancient temple of Lord Shiva and a civil case based on this claim is already pending in the court. In such a situation, sending a chadar on the occasion of Urs by people holding constitutional positions including the Prime Minister gives a wrong message and the Muslim side presents this chadar in the court in its support.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru started the tradition
According to the information, it has also been said in the application that the tradition of sending chadar to Ajmer Dargah was started by the country’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, which Hindu Sena calls a part of ‘Muslim appeasement policy’. The organization says that this tradition has gradually taken the form of a ‘bad practice’ and it should be banned until the verdict in the original case is given.
Sent a memorandum to the PM’s office requesting not to send the bed sheet.
Vishnu Gupta told the court that he had sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Office and other departments requesting them not to send the sheet, but when no action was taken, he had to approach the court. In the application, he has also demanded the court to intervene in this matter and stop the tradition.
Dargah’s annual Urs will start on 16th December
It is noteworthy that the annual Urs of Ajmer Dargah is going to start from 16th December this time. Traditionally the Prime Minister, Chief Minister and people holding other constitutional posts send chadars to the Dargah during Urs. Hindu Sena says that this practice of offering chadar is not even a part of Islamic tradition, hence there is no religious justification for continuing it.
Ajmer District Court will hear the petition to ban the covering of constitutional officials on December 10, while the next hearing on the original petition of Hindu Sena has been fixed for January 3. On the other hand, preparations for Urs are going on at a fast pace in Ajmer. Now the court’s decision is awaited as to what will be the future of this tradition amidst religious faith and controversy.
