The British government has taken a big decision regarding migration and people seeking asylum. The government has announced that now study visas will not be given to citizens of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan. Along with this, work visa for the people of Afghanistan will also be stopped. This step has been taken in view of those cases where some people who came in the name of studies later started seeking asylum.
Britain’s Home Ministry has said that the government says that in the last few years, applications for asylum from students coming from these countries have increased rapidly. For this reason, a decision has been taken to tighten the visa rules. According to government figures, from the year 2021 till now, about 1 lakh 35 thousand people reached Britain through legal routes and later sought asylum. Among them were many people who had come to the country on study visa.
Applications increased by this much percentage
There has been a rapid increase in the cases of students seeking asylum from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar and Sudan. Between 2021 and 2025, asylum applications made by students from these countries increased by more than 470 percent. The government believes that some people come with visa in the name of studies and later start the process of seeking asylum. This increases pressure on the visa system.

What did the Home Minister say?
Giving a statement on this decision, Britain’s Home Minister Shabana Mahmood said that Britain has always been providing help to the people fleeing war and atrocities. But the visa system cannot be allowed to be misused. He said that some people are trying to take advantage of our system. Therefore the government has had to take strict steps. He said that this decision was not easy, but it is necessary to keep the visa system in order. The Home Minister clearly said that it is Britain’s responsibility to provide security to the truly needy people, but following the rules is equally important.
Asylum applications increased in the name of studies
According to the government, many of the people who came on study visas in the last few years later applied for asylum. This increased the concern that some people are using the path of education for other purposes. Government reports state that asylum applications made by people coming on study visas still account for about 13 percent of the total cases. This is the reason why the government now wants to monitor this route more closely. However, the government also says that there has been a decline of about 20 percent in student asylum applications during the year 2025. Still, officials believe more steps need to be taken.
