Studying BTech from IIT in India is a life-changing moment for any student. Students reach the most prestigious institutes of India like IIT after clearing tough exams like JEE. But after reaching the institute, real challenges emerge.
High credit load, pressure to get high CGPA and career tension, all these things together increase mental pressure on students. Many times a student feels uncertain about his bright future even after studying in a prestigious institute like IIT. In view of these problems, IIT Madras has taken an important decision, which will reduce the pressure on students regarding studies to a great extent.
What was the biggest problem till now?
Till now the system was quite strict. If an IIT student was not able to complete his BTech course within a period of four years, even if he studied for two or three years, he did not have a valid degree. Such a student was technically considered a dropout. This is the basic problem, which IIT Madras understood and took necessary steps to deal with it.
Big decision of IIT Madras: Option of BSc after BTech
IIT Madras has taken a big and important decision for the students studying engineering. Now, if for any reason a student does not want or is unable to complete his BTech studies in four years, then his studies so far will not go in vain. The institute has decided that students who complete three years of BTech can exit the course with a valid BSc degree.
Requirements for BSc degree
Not every student will get the benefit of this new decision. Some clear conditions have been set for this. There are total 400 credits in BTech course and the student has to complete at least 250 credits out of these. Also, the academic record of the student should be good. That means he/she should have passed the examinations regularly, should not have failed repeatedly and the CGPA should not be very bad. If these conditions are not fulfilled, then there may be difficulty in getting BSc degree.
Changes were also made in the credit system
According to Professor Haridos, IIT Madras has not only given a new option of degree, but has also softened the entire system of studies, so that unnecessary pressure on the students can be reduced. Earlier, students had to complete a certain number of credits in every semester. Now the institute has reduced the minimum credit limit by about 10 percent.
When will the new rules come into effect?
This new option will be applicable for students taking admission in 2024 from the year 2027, when they will complete their three years. Apart from this, students who are already studying in BTech and are senior will also be given this opportunity. However, there will be different conditions for them, such as if they have previously attempted to complete a degree but have not been able to complete the course for some reason.
Semester load also reduced
Earlier, a student had to complete about 66 credits in a semester, which was considered a very heavy load. Now it has been reduced to a minimum of 50 credits, so that students can study with less stress and understand the subjects in a better way.
For which students is this decision most beneficial?
According to the Dean of IIT Madras, this scheme is especially beneficial for those students who are pursuing their course under pressure or without interest. If a student wants to do MBA, prepare for civil services, start a startup or want to go into any other field, then he can move ahead with BSc degree with honors. This decision has been taken under the National Education Policy (NEP).
