An Air India flight going from Delhi to Canada had to take a U-turn midway and return back to Delhi. The reason was the airline’s own operational lapses which became the cause of trouble for hundreds of passengers and wastage of crores of rupees. The 13 hour flight was wasted. Fuel burned, passengers were stranded and all because a basic permission check was not done before the flight.
What happened after all? Know the whole matter
On March 19, 2026, Air India flight AI 185 flew from Delhi to Vancouver. The Boeing 777-200 LR aircraft (VT-AEI) was deployed in the flight, which is the last 777-200 LR of Air India.
Realized mistake after flight
After about 4 hours, the ground staff suddenly realized that the permission to land in Canada is for Boeing 777-300 ER, not 777-200 LR. That means the flight could not land at Vancouver Airport. This check should have been done before the flight but was not done.
Pilot ordered to do U-turn
As soon as the ground staff realized the mistake, they instructed the pilot to turn back immediately. The plane took a U-turn and landed safely in Delhi after about 9 hours of flight. After flight cancellation, Air India accommodated the passengers in hotels. On March 20, passengers were sent to Vancouver on the correct aircraft Boeing 777-300 ER. The airline said that the flight returned due to an operational reason and it was as per the prescribed SOP. The airline also apologized to the passengers.
The government tightened these rules
There is good news for the passengers traveling by air recently. The Modi government at the Center has issued many important instructions while tightening the noose on airlines. Now passengers will not have to pay arbitrary money in the name of choosing a seat. Modi government has put a stop to this. The biggest relief is that now at least 60 percent seats in every flight will have to be given to passengers without any extra charges.
