A new and important beginning is going to happen for the electricity consumers in Delhi. Now people in the capital will be able to buy and sell electricity generated from solar panels installed in their homes or buildings from each other. To implement this system, Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) has approved the pilot project. This pilot scheme will be implemented for six months.

This new system is being called “Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading”. In simple words, now consumers who have solar panels and are generating more electricity than they need, will be able to sell that excess electricity directly to other consumers. Those who need more electricity will be able to buy it from other consumers.

This pilot scheme approved by DERC will be started on a limited scale. Its purpose is to see how effective this model of buying and selling electricity among consumers is and how much benefit the common people get from it. According to officials, technical, legal and practical aspects will also be assessed during this period.

Electricity will be available cheap

This scheme is expected to reduce the electricity bill, the houses which have solar panels installed will get the opportunity of additional earning. At the same time, consumers purchasing electricity will be able to get cheap electricity. Which will also benefit the environment, because solar energy is pollution free.

Delhi government has already taken many concrete steps to promote solar energy. Net metering system is already implemented in the capital, under which consumers can send excess electricity to the grid. Now with peer-to-peer trading this process will become more simple and straightforward. This initiative is also in line with the renewable energy policy and green energy goals of the Central Government.

Transparency and competition will increase in the energy sector

If this pilot project is successful then it can be implemented on a large scale in the future. This may bring a new change in the way electricity production, distribution and consumption is done in Delhi. Experts believe that this step will not only empower consumers but also increase transparency and competition in the energy sector. Overall, this new system being started in Delhi is being considered an important step in the direction of affordable, clean and reliable electricity for the general public.
