Byju Ravichandran, co-founder of debt-ridden edtech company Byju’s, has got a big relief. The American court has overturned the decision of awarding damages of one billion US dollars against him. Last month, the Bankruptcy Court of Delaware City had imposed this fine on Ravichandran, which Ravichandran challenged and he has got a big relief.
The founders of Think and Learn Private Limited, the company that operates Byju’s, have issued a statement regarding this. The statement said that the Bankruptcy Court, in a decision last month, had ordered Raveendran to pay more than one billion US dollars. The court had said that Raveendran had refused to cooperate with legal efforts to trace about half the amount received from the US $ 1.2 billion term loan given in 2021. However, Ravichandran had denied these claims.
Raveendran said that the court had not given him 30 days’ time to arrange for an American lawyer to present his case. Keeping this aspect in mind, Raveendran had decided to appeal against the court order. The statement said, ‘The Delaware court has overturned the one billion dollar verdict against Raveendran. Raveendran had filed a petition for modification of the decision dated November 20, 2025 and submitted fresh applications. A new phase has been ordered to begin in early January 2026 to determine any damages related to the claims against Raveendran.
Earlier in the year, Byju’s creditors, including Glass Trust, had filed a lawsuit against Raveendran, his co-founder wife Divya Gokulnath and another associate, Anita Kishore. He was accused of conspiring to steal the loan amount of $533 million. The statement said Raveendran is considering further action against Glass Trust and others for this conduct. However, no detailed information was given in this regard.
Raveendran had earlier said that he would sue the Glass Trust for US$2.5 billion. His legal counsel Michael McNutt said, ‘Byju Raveendran has not been found liable to pay a single dollar of damages to the plaintiff (Glass Trust Company LLC).’
