Sajjan Kumar has got a big relief in the 1984 Sikh riot case. Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has acquitted Sajjan Kumar in the Janakpuri Vikaspuri violence case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Two people had died in this violence case.
Former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, accused in this case, had said in his defense that he was innocent and was never involved in it. He had also said in the court that he could not even dream of taking part in such riots. Sajjan Kumar said that there is not a single evidence against him. The investigating agency has deliberately dragged him into this case.
The court had sought answers from CBI
Earlier in November 2025, while hearing the appeal of Sajjan Kumar, Delhi Court had issued a notice to CBI. The court had fixed the next hearing for January 28, 2026 for CBI’s reply.
Let us tell you, in the month of February, Sajjan Kumar was convicted and on 25 February 2025, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He filed an appeal against this in the Delhi High Court. The lawyer appearing for Sajjan Kumar argued in the court that his name was not in the FIR registered initially but was added later as part of the conspiracy.
Two FIRs against Sajjan Kumar
SIT had reopened this case in 2015. There were two FIRs against Sajjan Kumar. One report was made on 1 November 1984 regarding the murder of Sohan Singh and Avtar Singh and the other report was made on 2 November 1984 regarding the incident of burning Gurucharan Singh alive. He was facing trial in both the cases.
The lawyers on his behalf were continuously saying that CBI does not have any concrete evidence against Sajjan Kumar. When answers were sought from CBI, even the team did not present concrete evidence in the court. During the hearing, the court acquitted Sajjan Kumar.
