Bihar Election: Politics of Bihar has always been known for its colorful and scary history. The combination of crime and political influence has been the identity of some of the leaders here. Such leaders are colloquially called Bahubali MLAs. But the question arises that which strongman first contested the elections in Bihar and what were its results. Let us tell you who that MLA was.

Who was the first Bahubali MLA?

However, there may be difference of opinion in the answer to this, because there is neither any fixed concept regarding Baahubali MLA nor its history. But it is said that Veer Bahadur Singh was the first such strongman in Bihar who became MLA from Jagdishpur assembly seat in 1980. Veer Bahadur Singh was born in a big landholding family in Bagen village of Buxar district. His father was murdered by Naxalites, due to which Veer Bahadur Singh also took up arms. Initially his aim was to fight the Naxalites, but soon he started emerging as a powerful and caste leader in his area. The Rajput community recognized him as their hero and his influence increased day by day.

When did you fight for the first time?

When the first assembly elections were held in 1977, Veer Bahadur Singh contested from Jagdishpur as an independent candidate. He used his muscle power and regional influence, but this time he had to face defeat. His defeat by about 4 thousand votes did not discourage him, but gave him an opportunity to plan for the future.

By defeating whom did he register victory?

Veer Bahadur Singh changed his strategy in the mid-term elections held in 1980. He not only used his muscle power, but also took care of the caste equation of the area. The numbers of Yadav and Koeri communities were almost equal on this seat, and victory was often decided on the basis of their inclination. Veer Bahadur Singh gathered support by going to Koeri dominated areas and this caste support along with muscle power led him to victory. He got a total of 19,796 votes and defeated Hari Narayan Singh of Janata Party by about 4 thousand votes.

Veer Bahadur Singh laid the foundation of Bahubali leaders

His victory started a new phase in Bihar. Many powerful leaders in Bhojpur district and surrounding areas also aroused political ambitions. Among these, leaders like Gupteshwar Singh also contested the elections, although they did not get success. The path of Veer Bahadur Singh proved that the combination of muscle power and caste equation can have a big impact in politics. But this power also had to be paid for. Veer Bahadur Singh became the victim of a brutal murder in 1987. His political career laid the foundation for the rise of powerful leaders in Bihar and paved the way for many powerful leaders to reach the Assembly and Lok Sabha in the coming years.
