Received basic music education from mother in childhood
Zubin Garg was named after the famous musician Zubin Mehta. This name reflected the desire of his parents that their child should also do something big in the world of music. Zubeen Garg was born on 18 November 1972 in an Assamese Brahmin family in Tura, Meghalaya.
His father, Mohan Borthakur, was a magistrate, and his mother, Ili Borthakur, was herself a singer. Zubeen got his love and talent for music from his mother. He started singing at the age of just three years.
His passion for music started appearing in his childhood itself. His mother was his first guru, and it was she who gave Zubeen basic training in tabla and music.
Left college and chose music
Zubeen left college midway and started concentrating completely on singing. This was the time when he recorded his first Assamese album ‘Anamika’. After this, his songs ‘Tumi Junu Pariba Hun’ and ‘Tumi Junaki Hubakh’ were released in 1993.
Zubeen gave several consecutive Assamese albums, including ‘Japunor Jur’, ‘Junaki Mon’, ‘Maya’, and ‘Asha’.
Started career with Indipop album
Zubeen moved to Mumbai in 1995 and started his career with the Indipop album ‘Chandni Raat’. After this he gave albums like ‘Jalwa’, ‘Yuhi Kabhi’, ‘Jaadoo’ and ‘Sparsh’. Zubeen spread the magic of his voice in Bollywood also. He sang songs in films like ‘Gaddaar’, ‘Dil Se’, ‘Doli Saja Ke Rakhna’, ‘Fiza’, ‘Kaante’ and ‘Sapne Saare’. His hit songs gave him a different identity in the industry.
Singer has sung in more than 40 languages
Zubeen earned a lot of name not only in Hindi but also in Bengali music industry. He won the hearts of the Bengali audience with songs like ‘Mon’, ‘Shudhu Tumi’, ‘Piya Re Piya Re’, and ‘Chokher Jole’. His multilingual career made him an artist who was not bound by any boundaries and languages. Zubeen Garg sang songs in more than 40 languages and his voice became recognized everywhere.

Zubeen Garg also received many awards. The industry always appreciated his hard work and dedication. Especially for ‘Gangster’ he received the Best Playback Singer award. His contribution to Indipop, Bollywood and regional music will always be remembered. This year, on 19 September 2025, the news of Zubeen Garg’s death came to light. It was reported that he died due to drowning during a scuba diving in Singapore, although SIT investigation on this matter is going on.
