Roger Moore, who appeared to the world in the James Bond suit, was still the tailor’s son, who by fate wore a tuxedo (suit). Born on 14 October 1927 in London to George Alfred Moore and Calcutta-born Lillian. Know interesting things related to him on the occasion of his birthday.
How did your film career start?
Father became a tailor and then a policeman. There was discipline in the house, so there was no less struggle. The only child of his parents, he later enrolled in art school and started painting, but one day the professor said, ‘You should handle the camera, not paint.’ This conversation brought a new turn in his life. There was discipline in the house, but no room for dreams.
Starting out in films was not easy. Sometimes a toothpaste model, sometimes a background face on TV, sometimes a smiling man in commercials—no one took Roger Moore seriously. People used to say, ‘Don’t follow the face, career is made by the mind.’ But he was calm. Kept waiting. Finally in 1973 ‘Live and Let Die’ knocked at the door of destiny. Everything was not easy for this new James Bond. He came after Sean Connery, and no one could stop the comparison.
Roger Moore was known as the new James Bond
Whereas Roger Moore gave a new look to James Bond – sarcasm instead of anger, sly smile in the eyes instead of anger. His line ‘My name is Bond… James Bond’ waved not like a sword but like a silk handkerchief. He not only became Bond—he also became the oldest Bond. Questions were also asked amidst apprehensions and possibilities. Someone asked Bond for the first time at the age of 45 and for the last time at the age of 58? When asked about his age, he laughed and said, ‘If Bond can survive bullets then what is age?’
Always had a special relationship with India
Moore also had a special relationship with India. One is about mother and the other is about films! He came to India in 1983 for the shooting of Octopussy. He has mentioned this entire story in his biography My Word is My Bond. These excerpts show how important India was for him. The story goes that during the shooting, he came to India, Udaipur, the lakes, the palaces, the crowds and the heat and adopted it all whole-heartedly.
An Indian stunt artist narrowly escaped falling off a boat during a shoot. Know why, because Moore pulled him up without caring about himself. The people of the unit were stunned. He smiled and said ‘A Bond must save lives even without cameras’ (Bond saves lives not only in front of the camera but also outside) and in his own words he called India a poem of chaos. Wrote ‘India is chaos and charm, together.’
Won everyone’s heart with her smile
He roamed the streets of Udaipur without any security, took photos with children, drank tea, and said everywhere – ‘You don’t visit India…India visits you forever.’ He writes in his autobiography ‘My Word is My Bond’ – ‘I was not a hero, just a gentleman who was sometimes handed a gun.’
Moore died on 23 May 2017. He did not open fire, just kept winning with a smile. He wasn’t just 007; They were those Bonds who despite being old, remained young at heart and are still so today.
