Difference Between Acidity And Bloating: Often people ignore flatulence thinking it is due to heavy food or just acidity. Took one pill and it was over. But if you feel tightness in your stomach almost every day, your clothes start feeling tight by evening or you feel full after eating just a few mouthfuls, then the matter may not be normal. The intestines often give slow signals and frequent bloating is one of them. Let us tell you what its symptoms are.
What are the symptoms?
Acidity causes heartburn, sour belching or burning sensation in the upper stomach. Whereas in bloating there is a feeling of pressure, heaviness or swelling in the stomach. Both can be seen together, hence confusion occurs. Gas formation, slow intestinal movement, food intolerance, hormonal changes or thyroid disorders can also cause bloating without excess acid. According to Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, Internal Medicine, Apollo Hospital, frequent bloating should not be taken lightly, it could be a sign of irritable bowel syndrome, metabolic disturbance or hormonal imbalance.
When should you not ignore it?
Sometimes it is normal to feel flatulence after overeating during festivals, late night dinner or cold drinks. There is concern when this becomes a daily pattern or continues for weeks. Functional gastrointestinal problems are increasing due to urban lifestyle, stress and less physical activity. These may not be clearly visible in the scan, yet they affect the quality of life. Some symptoms especially demand attention, such as bloating every day, increased pain after eating, stomach pain, constipation or diarrhea, feeling full early, fatigue, weight loss or fever. Indigestion symptoms that persist for more than three months should be examined instead of treating them yourself. The role of hormones and thyroid is also important. When thyroid is low, intestinal movement slows down. Hormonal changes during periods or perimenopause are normal for water retention and increased gas. Stress also affects intestinal bacteria and movement.
When should you get tested?
Antacids provide immediate relief, but repeated use may mask the underlying problem. If bloating persists for more than two-three weeks or appetite, sleep and daily activities are affected, consult a doctor. Investigation usually starts with blood tests including thyroid, anemia, stool tests and if necessary, imaging or endoscopy. A balanced diet, fiber, adequate water, regular exercise and stress management are helpful in mild cases. But when the body gives repeated signals, it is wisest not to ignore them.
