Bowel Cancer Without Symptoms: 44-year-old Matt Emmer spent a weekend at a barbecue party with his family and friends. At the same time he felt a sharp and stinging pain in his stomach. Matt took it lightly and thought that perhaps some bad sausage eaten at the party could be the cause. He took pain pills and ignored it, but instead of reducing, the pain kept increasing.

This pain increased further when Matt was celebrating his son’s second birthday. Despite stomach cramps and restlessness, he kept trying to control himself, but seeing his condition, his wife Sara insisted on immediately taking him to a nearby hospital. In tests conducted at a hospital in Surrey, Britain, doctors found a large blockage in the intestine, which later turned out to be stage-4 bowel cancer.

What are the early signs of this cancer?

Doctors said that severe, stiffness-like pain in the stomach can be one of the early warning signs of bowel cancer, which people often ignore as gas or normal stomach pain. Matt underwent surgery and the tumor was removed and he had to undergo chemotherapy for six months. However, during treatment it was also revealed that the cancer had spread to the liver and the inner layer of the stomach (peritoneum).

Doctors told that BRAF mutation was found in Matt’s body, which is a genetic change and due to which cancer cells grow and spread very fast. The situation was so serious that the doctors told him to wait only a few months. But later he was given a new type of immunotherapy, which included cetuximab infusion and a medicine called encorafenib. The effect of these medicines was surprising and Matt’s condition started improving.

How does bowel cancer start?

Bowel cancer, also known as colon cancer, usually starts from small polyps that form in the inner lining of the intestine. If these polyps are not removed in time, they can turn into cancer and spread to other parts of the body through lymph nodes or blood. According to experts, sometimes the initial symptoms of bowel cancer are not visible. But signs like prolonged stomach pain, blood in stool, flatulence, sudden weight loss, vomiting, fatigue and breathlessness should never be ignored.

What do doctors say?

Doctors say that smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, excessive consumption of junk food, red and processed meat and lack of physical activity can increase the risk of bowel cancer. Timely checkup and improvement in lifestyle is considered the most effective way to prevent this serious disease.
