Misconceptions About Breast Cancer: Many times women get worried wondering whether the way of wearing bra or the color of bra increases the risk of breast cancer. Such claims are widely spread especially on social media. But scientific research shows that the tightness of the bra or its color has no relation with breast cancer. Let us tell you how much truth is there in this rumor and how much is it a myth.

What does the research say?

According to the Breastcancer Organization, experts believe that there is no scientific link between bras and cancer, so not much research has been done on it. Nevertheless, all the studies available clearly show that wearing a bra, the tightness of the bra, the color of the bra or the underwire does not increase the risk of cancer. A large 2014 study examined the bra-wearing habits of 1,513 women aged 55 to 74. Research found that cup size, how many hours the bra is worn, how fit the bra is, when did you start wearing the bra, none of these factors were associated with breast cancer.

Why was the old study misleading?

A 1991 study claimed that women who did not wear bras had less breast cancer. But the data was so weak that it could not be trusted. This difference may not be due to bra, but due to breast size and weight. Being overweight itself is a major risk for cancer, and women with larger breasts often wear bras for support. This makes it seem like “bra” is the cause, whereas the real cause is “weight.”

Then how did the myth spread?

The 1995 book “Dressed to Kill” spread the claim that the pressure of bras blocks the lymphatic system and prevents the body from flushing out toxins, which cause cancer. But this claim has no scientific basis. Clothing items like bras cannot block the lymphatic system.

Does bra tightness prevent lymph flow?

The answer is no. The lymphatic system is located deep in the body. The bra rests on top of the skin and its pressure cannot reach a level where it can prevent lymph flow. Tight bra can only cause discomfort or pain, not cancer.

Can bra color cause cancer?

Absolutely not. Be it black bra, red or any dark shade, there is no relation with cancer. Fabric dye does not penetrate the skin in such a way that it can cause cancer.
