Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman criticized those who defended the comment of Peter Navaro, a trade advisor of US President Donald Trump. The Finance Minister called him a friend of imperialists.
Navaro had said that Brahmins are benefiting from buying India’s Russian oil amid Ukraine War. Some people in India said that the tariff of Trump has probably borrowed from the American word Boston Brahmin, which means the old wealth aristocratic class.
‘I want Indians to think themselves’
In an interview to CNBC TV18, Nirmala Sitharaman said that the principle of exactly the same divide and rule which the British used, which the imperialists used here and today are telling us friends of imperialists. You know that this is the idiom of Boston Brahmins, not that.
The Finance Minister further said to forgive me. who’s Care? I want Indians to think themselves. The Finance Minister appealed to those who defended the language to stand in front of people like Peter Navarro. He said that I want the Indians who are now defending that language, they should get up and say that we are free from all of you for 75-80 years. We will work with our work and we will take care of ourselves. Avoid using these words.
This gesture of Nirmala Sitharaman was on the leaders who explained the word ‘Boston Brahmin’ after the comment of Peter Navaro’s “Brahmins earning profits from Russian oil in India”.
What did Sagarika Ghosh say about Navaro’s statement?
Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sagarika Ghosh cited Navaro’s statement. Posting on X, he said that the Boston Brahmin was once widely used for the rich aristocracy of New England in America. The Brahmin is still a word used to depict the social or economic aristocracy (in this case) in the English speaking world.
