Michelle Obama On Formula Milk: Every parent wants the best for their child, especially when it comes to their food, nutrition and health. Is it better to give mother’s milk or formula milk to a newborn baby? This question is often debated among new mothers. Meanwhile, former First Lady of America Michelle Obama recently revealed in a conversation that she herself grew up on formula milk.
In an episode of the podcast Call Her Daddy, which is hosted by Alex Cooper, Michelle Obama said that I am a formula baby, I am 5 feet 11 inches tall and my brain works perfectly fine. After this statement of hers, the discussion regarding formula milk once again intensified.
What is baby formula?
Experts say that baby formula is an alternative to mother’s milk, which is given when the mother is unable to breastfeed the child due to some reason. These are usually made from cow’s milk, but are processed in such a way that their composition is very similar to mother’s milk. When the child feels hungry, a fixed amount of formula powder is mixed in boiled water and given to him.
However, doctors warn that bottle feeding can increase the risk of infection, so feeding from a bowl or spoon is considered safer. They also make it clear that mother’s milk is the best, but if the mother is seriously ill or cannot breastfeed for some reason, formula milk can be given. Experts say that the child should be fed milk according to his needs. Doctors say that in the first two months after birth, only mother’s milk or its substitute is sufficient for the baby. If needed, formula can be given to the child even from the day of birth.
What do WHO’s new guidelines say?
The World Health Organization has updated its feeding guidelines for children under two years of age. According to this, children who are partially or completely dependent on formula can be given full-fat cow’s milk after six months of age. However, WHO also clarifies that after six months the iron requirement of children is not fulfilled by milk alone. Therefore, after this age it is important to give solid food rich in iron to children. This can include meat, eggs, pulses, green leafy vegetables, beans, lentils, ground seeds and nut butters, but without added salt and sugar.
These things should be kept in mind
WHO recommends that the child be given only mother’s milk for the first six months and thereafter breastfeeding should be continued for two years or more. Children under six months of age, if mother’s milk is not available, should be given only infant formula. At the same time, toddler formula is not recommended for children above 12 months of age.
