Sugar Production India: India’s sugar production has so far increased by 28.33 percent to 77.90 lakh tonnes in the current season 2025-26. However, the federation of cooperative sugar mills has demanded from the government to increase the minimum selling price. The sugar season runs from October to September. The federation has warned that due to the fall in market prices and increase in costs, payments to farmers are at risk.
What did NFCSF say?
National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd (NFCSF), representing farmer-owned mills, said sugar prices have fallen by about Rs 2,300 per tonne since the beginning of the session and now stand at around Rs 37,700 per tonne.
According to NFCSF data, till December 15, 479 operational sugar mills in the country have produced 77.90 lakh tonnes of sugar, whereas a year ago, 473 mills had produced 60.70 lakh tonnes of sugar.
Increase in sugar production
The federation said in a statement that sugarcane crushing has increased by 25.6 percent to 900.75 lakh tonnes. Sugar production in Maharashtra, the country’s largest sugar producing state, has increased from 16.80 lakh tonnes to 31.30 lakh tonnes, while in Uttar Pradesh, production has increased from 22.95 lakh tonnes to 25.05 lakh tonnes.
Till December 15, sugar production in Karnataka has increased from 13.50 lakh tonnes to 15.50 lakh tonnes on an annual basis. The federation has demanded the government to increase the minimum selling price to Rs 41 per kg and allow sending additional five lakh tonnes of sugar for ethanol production.
Due to this, sugar mills can get additional income of about Rs 20 billion. The federation welcomed the government’s decision to allow export of 15 lakh tonnes of sugar for the current season, but said this alone would not solve the cash crunch faced by mills.
