The two legendary faces of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, are now at that point in their careers, where with every brilliant innings, there is a fear in the minds of the fans that whether this is the last time? Even before the third ODI against Australia, there was a similar discussion that maybe both of them would make a big announcement regarding their retirement, but what happened on the field kept everyone silent. Rohit Sharma batted explosively in his old style at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and put India on the path to victory.
His rhythm, his confidence and every four-six was telling that ‘Hitman’ is a hit even today. Virat Kohli also reminded of his captaincy times and played with determination and class. Now the question regarding retirement is whether a player can announce his retirement while playing a match on the field or not? What are the rules for the players in this?
Can players retire at any time?
Imagine, a batsman is playing his last over, he suddenly takes off his helmet, looks at the team and says, ‘Enough, no more.’ It may sound like a film, but it has happened in the world of sports and can happen again. Actually, no law or rule stops any player from announcing his retirement during the match or in the middle of the series.
Who has to give information about retirement?
In cricket, football or other professional sports, a player’s retirement is a completely personal decision. It is not any board or coach that decides when he has to stop, but yes, there are some formalities which need to be completed. For example, in India a player has to inform the BCCI or his respective state cricket board before retiring. Similarly, at the international level, the player gives information to the ICC or the sports association of his country.
Why retire in the middle of the match?
Many times players suddenly take this step due to emotional or personal reasons, they may be mentally tired, troubled by frequent injuries, or fear of losing their place in the team. In cricket, some players have surprised the fans by saying goodbye during their last match.
However, usually players announce their departure only after the match is over or after completing the entire series. This is so that the team, fans and board can all get a chance to prepare, but no law says that the player cannot take this step in the middle of the game.
What is the retirement process?
The player first informs his team management and coach, then sends or emails an official letter to the concerned board. After this, if he wishes, he can address the media. There is no fixed time limit, some players say after the match that ‘this was my last game’, while others declare their retirement date months in advance.
