Watermelon in diabetes: In summer, you will see watermelon selling almost everywhere. It is not only sweet in taste, but also cools the body, but due to sweetness in it, diabetes patients have to think before eating it. In this article, we will know whether to eat watermelon for diabetes patients is right or not, let us know in detail-

Glycemic index and glycemic load

When it comes to diabetes, it is most important to understand how fast diet increases blood sugar in our body. This is called a glycemic index (GI). Watermelon GI is about 72, which falls in the higher class. But its glycemic load (GL) is low, about 5 grams per 100 grams, which falls in the low category.

This means that even if the watermelon can increase sugar quickly, if it is eaten in small amounts, then its total effect is not much.

Can diabetic patients eat watermelon?

Yes, you can eat watermelon in diabetes, but consume it only in limited quantity. Throughout the day, 100–150 grams of about 1 cup chopped pieces can eat watermelon at once. It would be better to eat watermelon with protein or fiber food, so that blood sugar does not increase rapidly. Fiber does not occur in watermelon juice at all. It has more GI in it. So it is better to eat fresh fruit. Keeping in mind the day -to -day carbohydrate quantity, include watermelon in your diet.

Who should be cautious?

If someone’s blood is not under sugar control, or HBA1C is very high, then it is necessary to consult a doctor. Along with this, patients dependent on insulin should take special care of quantity and time.
