Can India’s problems increase due to tension between Iran and America? Know what will be the effect?

India-Iran Relation: The conflict between America and Iran is at its peak at this time. It is being told that in this Middle East country, people are on the streets against the government led by Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Anti-government protests on such a large scale have not been seen before in the last 47 years. On December 28, people are on the streets in Iran over the falling value of the Rial against the US dollar and rising inflation.

Now the question comes whether the flames of this fire spreading in Iran will engulf India also? Will this unrest in Iran affect India also? This question is coming to mind because India is linked to Iran from strategic and trade point of view. Let us understand this in a little more detail.

What is the matter of concern for India?

The deteriorating condition of Iran and increasing tension with America is worrying for India because India is investing huge money in many projects focusing on expanding its reach to Central Asia, Russia and Europe. The most important among these is Chabahar port located on the south-eastern coast of Iran. This is a project on which India has spent millions of dollars. Through this port, India is able to bypass Pakistan and directly reach Afghanistan and the countries of the Middle East.

Why is Chabahar Port important?

Chabahar Port is also an important part of the International North-South Transport Corridor. This corridor, more than seven thousand kilometers long, is a network of ship, rail and road routes, which connects India with Iran as well as Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Russia, the Middle East and Europe. Due to this, INSTC is shorter than the Suez Canal route, which reduces both time and cost of transportation of goods. Due to this, India’s trade with many countries of the world increases, which strengthens India’s economy.

trade between india and iran

According to the data of Commerce Department, there is large scale trade between India and Iran. It reached approximately US $ 1.68 billion in the business year 2024-25. Out of this, India exported goods worth 1.24 billion dollars. Whereas the import was only 0.44 billion dollars. Due to increasing tension in Iran, trade activities between Chabahar port will reduce, which is also likely to affect the trade through INSTC.
