Blood Pressure Effects on Heart: We often think of the heart as a strong muscle, which keeps beating continuously for years. But a new study from the University College of London has shown that the heart does not just pump blood, it also stores the memory of your blood pressure within itself. Research has shown that the pattern of your blood pressure has a direct impact on your heart health at the age of 70. That is, if your blood pressure remains even slightly high in middle age, its effect on the power of the heart will be clearly visible as you age. Let us tell you whether the heart can be damaged even by normal blood pressure?
What came out in the research?
This study is funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) and published in the journal Circulation Cardiovascular Imaging. In this, more than 450 British citizens were tracked for several decades. The results clearly showed that people whose blood pressure remained slightly elevated, even if in the ‘normal’ range, had blood flow to the heart reduced by 6 to 12 percent by the age of 70.
What do experts say?
Professor Nish Chaturvedi, senior researcher of this study, says that “the heart remembers. Even a slight increase in blood pressure over a long period of time has a slow but deep impact.” Actually, this research challenges traditional thinking. Till now we considered blood pressure as a limit based problem, i.e. if it goes above 140/90 then there is danger, if it remains below then it is safe. But this study has shown that the real meaning lies not in any single reading, but in how your blood pressure changes from year to year. This means that your body may look strong in your 30s or 40s, but persistently mildly increased blood pressure can narrow the arteries of the heart in the coming decades. This is why doctors are now advising to pay attention to blood pressure trends instead of single readings.
Your 30s start writing the story of your 70s. At this time, habits like staying awake till late night, eating too much salt, caffeine and stress gradually start showing their effects. At the age of 40, work and responsibilities increase, stress hormones also increase. In such a situation, it is important not only to see the report from the doctor every time, but also to know the trend of blood pressure in the last few years. Include fresh fruits, vegetables, oats, and fiber-rich food in your diet. Also make yoga or meditation routine.
