US President Donald Trump has threatened Canada with 100 percent tariff, after which Prime Minister Mark Carney is looking towards India to deal with strategic and economic challenges. Indian High Commissioner to Canada Dinesh Patnaik said that Mark Carney may visit India soon. During this time, Carney can sign agreements related to uranium, energy, minerals and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
When can Mark Carney come to India?
In an interview given to news agency Reuters, Dinesh Patnaik said, ‘India’s Union Budget will be presented on February 1, 2026 and after that Carney may visit India in the first week of March. Formal negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) with India should also begin in March. During his visit, Carney will sign agreements related to nuclear energy, oil and gas, environment, artificial intelligence, education and culture.
Carney engaged in improving relations with India
Carney is trying to improve relations between India and Canada again. Former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau had accused the Indian government of involvement in the murder of a Sikh separatist leader in 2023, after which the distance between the two countries increased. However, India had denied Canada’s allegations.
Carney points towards new world order
At the Davos World Economic Forum, the Canadian PM had hinted towards the formation of a new world order. He said, the system based on old rules has now ended. There is a need to form an alliance with a middle power like Canada to create a more powerful world. He also visited China on 26 January 2026. In the joint statement issued after this, many agreements were agreed upon, including reducing tariffs on Canadian agri-food products. However, Carney also made it clear that Canada has no plans to make a free trade deal with China.
Canadian Foreign Minister met S Jaishankar
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Monday (January 26, 2026) met her Indian counterpart S. Met Jaishankar in New Delhi. Both the leaders talked about further strengthening mutual relations in different fields. There was a meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and PM Narendra Modi at the G7 Summit in June last year, after which India and Canada are further strengthening their relations. Both countries reinstated their High Commissioners and also announced a shared roadmap for future cooperation.
