Early Signs Of Prostate Cancer: Prostate cancer is a cancer that occurs in men, which starts in the prostate gland. Prostate is a small gland, which helps in producing sperm. The biggest problem of this disease is that its symptoms are often not visible in the initial stages. Many men do not feel any special problem in the beginning, because early prostate cancer keeps growing silently. Many times this disease continues to grow slowly for years and comes to light only when it has progressed significantly. This is the reason why this cancer catches people without warning.

serious problem in india

In India, prostate cancer ranks third among cancers in men. Before this comes cancer of the lungs and mouth. Every year around 15 lakh new cases are reported worldwide and the number of cases is expected to increase continuously with increasing age. According to a study published in the Indian Journal of Urology in 2024, cases of prostate cancer start increasing rapidly after the age of 50 and further increase is seen after the age of 64. The matter of concern is that in about 43 percent of cases, cancer is detected when it has spread to other parts of the body.

Lack of awareness in India

Despite being such a common disease, awareness about prostate cancer is very low in India. A big reason for this is that the initial symptoms seem very normal. Most men ignore problems like frequent urination at night or weak urine stream as the effect of increasing age or consider it to be a common problem of prostate enlargement. The symptoms are so mild that people do not even think that there is a need to see a doctor.

Symptoms are not visible in the beginning

According to the Mayo Clinic, there are often no symptoms in the early stages of prostate cancer. However, there may be some signs which should not be ignored. These include bleeding in urine, due to which the color of urine may appear pink or red, bleeding in sperm, frequent urination, difficulty in starting to urinate and getting up repeatedly at night to urinate. If the cancer progresses, symptoms like leakage of urine, pain in the back or bones, difficulty in erection, extreme fatigue, unexplained weight loss and weakness in hands and legs may appear.

What are its symptoms?

Surgical oncology specialist Dr Arun Kumar Goyal told TOI that with increasing age, many men develop the problem of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Its symptoms include weak urine stream, bladder not emptying completely and getting up to urinate more than twice at night. Symptoms of BPH usually progress slowly, whereas symptoms of prostate cancer may progress rapidly and may be accompanied by symptoms such as blood in the urine or sperm, persistent bone or back pain, and sudden weight loss.

According to doctors, regular screening of prostate cancer is usually started after the age of 50 years. Men whose family has had prostate cancer should undergo PSA test and digital rectal examination from the age of 40 to 45. With timely diagnosis and taking the symptoms seriously, prostate cancer can be caught in the early stages, where the chances of successful treatment are very high.
