Lung Cancer In Non-Smoking Women: Cancer cases have increased rapidly in the last few years. Lung cancer, which was earlier called a smoker’s disease, is no longer so. According to government data, a continuous increase in its cases is being recorded among non-smoking women in the metropolitan cities of the country. Doctors of Delhi say that this change is now clearly visible in their clinics also. Let us tell you about it in detail.
What did the government say?
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, the Union Health Ministry, citing data from the ICMR-National Cancer Registry Programme, said that lung cancer cases have increased in metropolitan cities between 1982 and 2016. The special thing is that adenocarcinoma has now become the most common type of lung cancer in women. This cancer starts from the gland and is most commonly seen in non-smokers. According to statistics, about 53 percent of lung cancer cases in women are of this type, which indicates a major change in the pattern of the disease.
diesel and kerosene fumes
According to a TOI report, this change was announced by Dr. G.C., Chairman and Senior Pulmonologist, PSRI Institute of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. Khilnani said that earlier, where 80 to 90 percent of lung cancer patients were smokers, now 15 to 20 percent of patients worldwide are non-smokers. In India this figure is even higher. According to Dr. Khilnani, diesel smoke is a proven cause of lung cancer, while kerosene smoke also increases the risk. Apart from this, biomass fuel, passive smoking and overall air pollution further increase this danger.
cancer in women
Other experts also believe that this reflects a silent epidemiological shift. Dr. Kapil Kumar, Senior Director (Surgical Oncology), Action Cancer Hospital, says that adenocarcinoma has now become the leading lung cancer in non-smoking women and environmental and organic factors are more responsible for this than tobacco. He says that urban women are constantly exposed to toxic pollution, but lung cancer is still linked only to smoking. For this reason, the initial symptoms are often ignored and the disease is detected only when it has reached the advanced stage.
