Indian scientists have achieved great success in making cancer treatment more personalized. In a new research in India, such an Artificial Intelligence (AI) framework has been developed, which by reading the complex activities taking place inside the cancer cells, can tell why the tumor is growing and what dangerous processes are active in the patient’s body.
The old way of understanding cancer is no longer enough!
Till now, doctors have been evaluating cancer on the basis of its size, spread and stage, but the results of two patients with the same stage are often different because these staging systems are not able to recognize the molecular processes going on inside the tumor. The new AI technology fills this gap. It understands cancer based on its ‘molecular personality’, not just its size or spread.
The first AI framework to read cancer signals
The team of SN Bose National Center for Basic Sciences and Ashoka University have together created an AI framework named OncoMark. It is the first technology that can accurately identify hallmarks of cancer such as metastasis, escape from the immune system, gene instability and therapy resistance. This research team was led by Dr. Shubhashis Haldar and Dr. Debayan Gupta.
Research done on 14 types of cancer
Researchers fed data from 31 lakh cells taken from 14 types of cancer into AI. AI worked on these and prepared ‘pseudo-biopsies’, through which it was understood which tumor was being operated by which biological processes. This is the first time that scientists have been able to see at the molecular level how hallmark activities increase as the cancer stage increases.
How was the result?
OncoMark achieved over 99% accuracy in internal testing. Its accuracy remained above 96% even in 5 independent groups. After validation on samples of 20,000 real patients, researchers have declared it to be widely usable.
These will be the benefits of new technology
- It will be known which hallmark is active in the patient. With this, a medicine or therapy that directly targets the root cause of cancer can be selected.
- Such tumors will be identified which are less dangerous in appearance but are growing rapidly from inside. In such cases, the patient’s life can be saved by early intervention.
What will be the benefit?
According to experts, this system will also help those patients whose cancer appears mild in the traditional staging system, but is actually much more aggressive. This research has been published in Communications Biology (Nature Publishing Group). This achievement of India is being considered as a big step in cancer research, which can give a new direction to targeted therapy and personalized medicine in the future.
