Case of installing QR stickers at Kawad Yatra Marg shops, Supreme Court sought reply from UP and Uttarakhand government

The Supreme Court has sought answers from both the state governments on installing special QR code at the shops of Kavad Yatra route in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The case will be heard next Tuesday (July 22, 2025). The petitions filed in the court states that by scanning the QR code, the names of the shop owners can be known. This is a violation of last year’s order of the Supreme Court.

In the order given on 26 July 2024, the Supreme Court had stayed the order of administration of writing the name of the shopkeeper outside the shop. Then the court had said that shopkeepers do not need to tell the names of themselves and their employees. They only have to tell what food they are selling. Petitioners are telling against this order for installing QR stickers.

Advocate General Jatinder Sethi of Uttarakhand asked for 2 weeks for the answer as soon as he started hearing on the application filed by Professor Apoorvanand and social activist Size Patel of Delhi University. Senior advocate Shadan Farit from the petitioner side opposed this. He said that the Kanwar Yatra is for limited time, therefore, the matter should be heard soon.

After the brief cross -examination, the bench of Justice MM Sundresh and Justice N. Kotishwar Singh asked Uttarakhand and UP government to file a reply. The court said that it will listen to the matter next Tuesday. TMC leader Mahua Moitra and NGO Association for Protection of Civil Rights are also petitioners in this case. Senior advocate CU Singh and Hujifa Ahmadi were present in the court during the hearing on their behalf.
