Why Hair Turns Gray With Age: Graying of hair with age is a natural process. Just as other parts of the body come under the influence of age, hair also undergoes ageing. According to skin specialists, the cells that determine hair color start weakening with time, due to which the hair gradually loses its natural color. Let us tell you whether it can be stopped.

What do experts say?

Dermatologists say that in most people, white hair starts appearing after the age of 30 or 40. The biggest reason behind this is the weakening of melanocyte stem cells. These are the same cells that deliver melanin pigment to the hair and give it black, brown or golden color. When these cells stop functioning properly, hair starts turning white or grey.

This entire process is called cellular senescence in medical language. In this the hair gradually reduces the production of pigments. This is the reason why the hair which was black or brown earlier, starts appearing gray or white with time. Many people also feel that the texture of white hair becomes drier or thicker than before. Apart from age, genetics also plays a big role in this. Experts say that people are often gray like their parents. That is, if there is a trend of early gray hair in the family, then the chances of it happening in the next generation are also high. It has also been found in some research that the age at which hair turns gray may be different in different breeds.

Can this be stopped?

Earlier it was believed that graying of hair was completely certain and it could not be changed. But research shows that this process is not completely “fixed”. Some factors can speed up or slow it down. In some studies, deficiency of nutrients like Vitamin B12 and iron have been linked to premature graying of hair. Additionally, prolonged stress can also accelerate this process. Research has found that excessive stress can damage the cells that produce hair pigments. However, doctors say that it is not possible to completely stop graying of hair, but this process can be slowed down to some extent with a balanced diet, stress control and healthy lifestyle.
