Taking a big initiative, the Central Board of Secondary Education has given instructions to set up menstrual health centers in all the affiliated schools. This step has been taken after the recent order of the Supreme Court of India. Its objective is to provide better health facilities to the girls studying in schools and to create a safe and respectful environment for them.
Steps taken after Supreme Court’s decision
The Supreme Court, in its decision given on January 20, 2026, had clearly said that getting cleanliness and facilities during menstruation is the fundamental right of every girl. According to the court, if these facilities are not available in schools, it will have a direct impact on girls’ education and their self-confidence. Keeping this decision in mind, CBSE has directed schools to set up menstrual health centres, so that girl students do not have to face any kind of problem.
What will happen in the menstrual health center?
Many necessary facilities will be provided for the girl students in these centres. Sanitary napkins will be easily available here, so that girls can use them without hesitation if needed. Apart from this, special care will be taken of cleanliness and there will also be arrangements for safe disposal of used napkins. In some schools, these centers will also be developed as MHM corners, where important health related information will also be provided.

Emphasis also on awareness and education
CBSE has also made it clear that merely providing facilities is not enough. Schools will also have to make students aware on this subject. For this, health sessions, puberty education and gender sensitive discussions will be organized from time to time. The aim of these programs is to make the students understand this subject and to eliminate the hesitation in the society regarding it.
Schools will have to submit reports
CBSE has also implemented a reporting system for schools. All schools will have to give information about their preparation and facilities every month. The first report will have to be submitted by 31 March 2026 and the second by 30 April 2026. This report will be accepted only through the official Google form, so that the entire process remains transparent.
Safe environment initiative for girls
The biggest objective of this initiative is to create such an environment in schools where girls can talk about their needs without any fear or shame. Even today, there is hesitation in many places regarding menstruation, but with such a step, this thinking can gradually change.
