Elections are going to be held today for the post of Mayor in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, along with this there will be elections for Senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor. The fight in the House with a total of 35 councilors has become interesting. BJP has the maximum of 18, AAP has 11 and Congress has six. But add one vote of MP to this and he has 7 votes. Saurabh Joshi from BJP, Yogesh Dhingra from AAP and Gurpreet Singh Gabi from Congress are avoiding the field.
This will be the first time that the election will be held by raising hands in support of the candidate instead of ballot paper. Voting will begin at 11 am in the corporation’s Embley Hall and entry will close at 10:45 pm. The contest is expected to be very interesting.
There are total 35 councilors
BJP has the highest number of councilors at 18, AAP has 11 and Congress has six while one vote is of MP, which Congress has in the form of MP Manish Tiwari. There are a total of 35 councilors in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. To win the post of Mayor, 19 votes are required. BJP has only one vote less, whereas if Congress and AAP come together then the contest can be close.
BJP has the upper hand – fear of cross voting
In the last few days, many AAP councilors have been seen with BJP leaders. In such a situation, it is believed that cross voting is spoiling the fun of the opposition. The mathematics is in favor of BJP. Because it wants only one vote, whereas it is not clear whether AAP and Congress will come together or not. At present candidates from all three parties are in the fray. Now only cross voting is the only support for victory.
Administration preparations and security arrangements
Chandigarh administration is on alert regarding mayor elections. Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav held a meeting with senior officials of the Municipal Corporation and reviewed the preparations. He gave necessary instructions for security arrangements. Since the contest is extremely tough, there are chances of an uproar.
