The stir regarding the three-tier Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh has intensified. Meanwhile, Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) chief and Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad has demanded to make arrangements for proper reservation of seats and posts for Other Backward Classes in the elections and has demanded the Election Commission to take necessary action.

Nagina MP has written a letter in this regard to CM Yogi Adityanath, Panchayati Raj Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar and the State Election Commission. He said that a very important, constitutional and social justice question related to reservation for Other Backward Classes has arisen in the proposed three-tier Panchayat elections in Uttar Pradesh.

OBC reservation should be ensured

If the OBC community does not get its representation in Gram Panchayat and District Panchayats, then not only will the rights of one section be violated, but it will also be a direct attack on the spirit of social justice enshrined in the Constitution. Under Article 243D(6) of the Constitution, the state has the right to make arrangements for OBC reservation in Panchayats.

Chandrashekhar said that it is the responsibility of the state government to implement OBC reservation. Due to the negligence of the UP government regarding OBC reservation in the municipal elections of 2023, the High Court had to put a stay on the electoral process. After which the government had to take corrective steps.

Chandrashekhar Azad demanded from the government

He expressed concern that instead of learning lessons from the experience of 2023, the government has not taken any clear, timely and transparent action regarding OBC reservation in Panchayat elections. This situation reflects administrative failure and also exposes the government’s indifference towards the rights of the OBC community.

Nagina MP demanded that OBC reservation should be ensured in the upcoming Panchayat elections and it should be completed in a time bound manner by learning from the previous elections. Under no circumstances should a situation be allowed to create panchayat elections without OBC reservation. He said that this is not a special favor but a demand for the rights granted by the Constitution.
