IIT Council has taken an important step towards making the JEE (Advanced) examination conducted for admission in the country’s largest engineering institutes better, fairer and less stressful. This time the IIT Council has recommended forming an expert committee to consider the possibility of implementing an adaptive testing system. In this new system, questions will change in real-time according to the level of the students, which will increase the quality of the examination and reduce unnecessary pressure on the students.
In adaptive testing, the questions start out easy and as students answer correctly, the level of questions gradually becomes more difficult. Its advantage is that those conducting the examination can know to what level the students can understand and think. With this, the student’s reasoning and thinking ability can be better evaluated.
IIT Council has suggested that an optional pilot adaptive test be conducted before JEE (Advanced) 2026. Its purpose is to collect data related to the performance of students. Based on these data, adaptive testing can be implemented in a phased manner in future.
Efforts to reduce dependence on coaching
Director of IIT Kanpur, Prof. Manindra Aggarwal expressed concern over the current JEE (Advanced) system in the meeting. He says that due to the examination, a big coaching industry has come up, which increases mental and financial pressure on students and families.
He suggested that adaptive and aptitude based questions can reduce dependence on coaching. He believes that coaching cannot change the innate intelligence of a student, but teaches him to use it in a better way.
free mock test
IIT Council has also recommended that free mock tests be conducted about two months before JEE (Advanced). Its objective is to familiarize students with the exam pattern and reduce stress during preparation. Let us tell you that JEE (Advanced) is usually held in the month of May.
focus on these things
There was also a serious discussion on the mental health of the students in the meeting. In view of the number of suicide cases on IIT campuses in recent years, the council has recommended the appointment of mental health professionals in all IITs. This includes counsellor, psychologist and psychiatrist. These appointments can be made on regular or contract basis.
IIT Gandhinagar has been given the responsibility of preparing the model for structure, promotion and quality check of these posts. Director of IIT Gandhinagar, Prof. Rajat Moona said that mental health is a serious issue for engineering institutions. He said that at present there are different arrangements in IITs, in some places there is one counselor for 500 students, and in some places the number is different. Now IITs are working together towards creating a uniform and effective system.
