Chhath Puja 2025: How much danger is there from river water during Chhath Puja? The doctor told the way to escape

The holy festival of Chhath Puja is around the corner and lakhs of devotees are ready to take a dip in the rivers during Nahay Khay. However, the water of many rivers is so polluted that it can harm health. Dr. Sameer Kalra of Delhi’s famous Sir Ganga Ram Hospital has given a serious warning regarding the water of rivers. He told that the water of many rivers is highly polluted, which can cause serious damage to the skin and nerves. He told many such methods with the help of which precautions can be taken.

Why is there danger from river water?

According to Dr. Kalra, there are two main problems in the water of many rivers. Firstly, the amount of fecal waste in the water of many rivers is much more than the acceptable limit. Secondly, many types of heavy metals are present in this water, which are dangerous for the body. These two things together can cause huge harm to health.

What harm can happen to the skin?

Dr. Kalra says that the excreta and urine present in river water can have adverse effects on the skin. There is so much bacteria and dirt in this water that it can harm the skin. Due to this, there is a risk of causing diseases like dermatitis, which causes red rashes, itching and swelling on the skin. Sometimes it becomes so serious that even wounds are formed on the skin. Especially children and those people whose skin is sensitive are at greater risk.

Why does the risk increase?

During Chhath Puja, devotees sometimes stand in water for hours. In such a situation, contact between dirty water and skin lasts for a long time, due to which the risk increases. According to Dr. Kalra, people think that the water of rivers is sacred, but due to pollution it has now become harmful for health. By taking a little caution we can reduce this danger.

How much damage do heavy metals cause to the nerves?

Heavy metals like lead, mercury and arsenic present in river water can enter the body through the skin. If a little water goes into the mouth while bathing, these metals start accumulating in the body. If this happens for a long time, it can cause damage to the nerves, which is called neuropathy. According to Dr. Kalra, heavy metals gradually accumulate in the body and can cause serious diseases after many years. Especially the elderly and already ill people need to be more careful.

Be sure to keep these tips in mind

  • Do not take water into mouth: Do not drink river water under any circumstances. While bathing, try not to let water enter the mouth. If water gets into the mouth, rinse immediately.
  • Apply oil: If you have to take a dip, massage the entire body with oil before bathing. Mustard, coconut or any natural oil can be used. Oil forms a layer on the skin, which prevents water from reaching the skin directly.
  • Cleanse the body immediately: After taking a dip, take bath with clean water as soon as possible. Use soap or shampoo, so that the pollutants present on the skin are completely cleaned. If possible, use hot water, it cleans the skin well.
