China on us over tiananmen square: What happened on June 4, 1989 at Tianmen Square, Beijing, became a symbol of democracy and repression conflict for the whole world but also for the whole world. Thousands of students and common citizens were protesting against political freedom, freedom of press and corruption. These peaceful demonstrations ended with tanks and bullets. The performance at Tianmen Square lasted from 15 April to 4 June 1989. In the action taken by PLA (People’s Liberation Army), more than hundreds to thousands of people died. However, till date the Chinese government has not made public the correct information related to death statistics. Discussion, education or media coverage is completely banned in China since the incident.
On the 36th anniversary of Tianmen Square, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the world will never forget what happened on June 4. His statement was an attempt to honor such a legacy, which China has been trying to hide for years. He directly accused China of censoring the facts. Rubio recalled the students who were martyred in Tianmen Square, but also mentioned the workers who are struggling for the freedom of human rights and expression even today.
China’s sharp reaction
China described Rubio’s remarks as serious intervention in China’s internal affairs. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lynn Gian said that this statement is a conspiracy to deliberately distort historical facts. China registers strong protest against this. The Chinese government’s policy on this issue is clear that forgetting Tianmen is the only option. Let us know that the issue related to Tianmen has been erased from Chinese internet, education system and media.
Taiwan’s vocal role
Taiwan President Lai Ching-Te wrote in a Facebook post in memory of Tianmen that we remember the sacrifice of our ancestors. Democratic society protects the truth, while the totalitarian governments want to eradicate history. This statement clearly exposed the gap between the communist ideology of China and the democratic value of Taiwan. On the other hand, China considers Taiwan as its part and threatens to mix it by force. For this, he has also directly threatened Taiwan.
Hong Kong’s silence and Chow Hang-Tung’s hunger strike
Hong Kong, which was once the only Chinese region of Tianmen remembrance, now the National Security Act has come into force there too. Former lawyer and activist Chow Hang-Tung has been imprisoned for organizing public performances. This year, he has kept the memory of democracy alive by taking a 36 -hour hunger strike in jail.
