China has shown a positive attitude towards the recent visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India, saying that strong trilateral relations between India, China and Russia are important not only for regional but also global stability and peace. This statement of China has come at a time when relations between Russia and China are already strong and India-China relations are moving towards normalization.
‘India-China-Russia are important pillars of the Global South’- Ministry of External Affairs
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said in a press briefing that China, India and Russia are emerging economies and important voices of the Global South. He said that strong and lasting cooperation between these three countries will not only be beneficial for them but will also contribute to global security, development and prosperity. Guo said, ‘Keeping trilateral cooperation strong is in the interest of all countries and will prove beneficial for stability in Asia and the entire world.’

Towards improvement in India-China relations
China has also given positive signals on India-China relations, which have cooled down since the 2020 tension in Eastern Ladakh. Guo Jiakun said that Beijing is committed to making relations with India natural, stable and strong with a long-term perspective. He said, ‘We are ready to handle these relations with India from a strategic and long-term perspective, so that the people of both the countries can get real benefits.’
China’s reaction to Putin’s statement
Beijing was keeping an eye on the deepening Russia-India relations. In an interview given before his visit to India, Putin had described India and China as Russia’s closest friends and expressed confidence that both the countries can resolve their disputes on their own. Responding to this statement, China said that it is ready to pursue strong bilateral cooperation with both Russia and India. China’s state media gave prominence to these statements of Putin, in which he also rejected American criticism on India buying oil from Russia.
Many agreements during Putin’s visit to India
President Vladimir Putin came on an official visit to India on 4-5 December. This was his first visit to India after 2021. During this period, many important agreements related to trade, defence, energy and investment were signed. Both countries aimed to increase bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030 and approved a long-term economic cooperation program.
